Our History

In the early 1920's Clarence G. Hagey left the family farm in Franconia Township to seek employment. He was the last of ten children born on the farm and there was simply not enough work for him and his brothers and sisters. Clarence had an interest in trucks and busses and found a job as a mechanic at the Norman L. Bergey garage in the nearby village of Franconia. He also drove charter buses part time for Harvey G. Ziegler of Souderton.
As the surrounding population grew, one-room schoolhouses in Franconia Township became overcrowded. The school board needed someone to bus students from their neighborhoods to consolidated schools in Souderton. In 1936, Clarence signed his first bus contract with the Franconia Township School Board for an amazing $1.50 per day. In 2011, we will celebrate seventy-five years of bus transportation operated by the Hagey Family.
To help his business grow and keep himself busy when not transporting students, Clarence began to operate several daily routes from the Skippack and Vernfield area to factories in Souderton and Telford. After World War II, the automobile became more popular and the route service was discontinued.
Clarence was also interested in the charter bus business and he obtained the needed license to operate charter buses in Pennsylvania to neighboring states.
During World War II charter buses were not available, many bus operators used school buses for their charter service. After the war was over, charter buses were still difficult to purchase, so Clarence bought a few used troop transport buses and had comfortable seats installed. In 1947, he purchased his first real charter coach a "Flxible Clipper" made in Loudenville Ohio. As the business grew he added more charter buses and school buses to his fleet.
Clarence was assisted in the bus business by his eldest son, Gerald.  In 1954, Gerald and his wife Dorothy purchased the charter bus portion of the business from his father. The Gerald S. Hagey family operated the tour and charter bus business until 1995 and during that time the business showed wonderful growth.
Donald, Clarence's youngest son assisted his father in operating the school bus business. In 1970, Clarence sold the school bus business to Donald.  The name was changed to Transportation Services Inc. Today Transportation Services Inc operates over 140 school buses in the five county Philadelphia region.
In 1995, Donald S. and Linda Hagey purchased the charter coach and tour business from the Gerald S. Hagey family and began operating it along with the school bus company at a new terminal on Schoolhouse Road in Franconia Township. Today members of both the Gerald and Donald S. Hagey families are employed along with many other long term dedicated employees and managers.
In 2011, the Hagey Family will be celebrating seventy-five years of school bus, and charter coach operations.
